OUR PROGRAM FOUNDATION

Development with Holistic Play

We are dedicated to providing a warm, friendly, stimulating environment in which children will have the opportunity to have fun, socialize with peers.

A variety of stations and activities are implemented that focus on the five core areas of development. Routines will facilitate the physical care and nurturing of the child. Large muscle activities in the playground will provide for physical development and field trips will extend the program.

Gross Motor Development

Floor blocks, mini gym apparatuses to promote climbing, parachutes, yoga, balance beams, all to help develop muscle coordination, posture and strength. It also allows for group interactions and an outlet for energy.

Housekeeping Station

A play station designed with “real-life” toys including a play kitchen, vacuum, cleaning toys, computer, office phone, etc. Children are able to free play and explore completing tasks which may become part of their standard daily life.

Investigation Station

Miscellaneous materials are provided such as nature or recycled products from which children are given the freedom to develop ideas, games, or pretend play.

Story Time & Reading

Books are provided to read freely & in a group setting. Books are picked based on their social and cultural diversities, promoting self positivity, explaining feelings and teaching daily tasks while showing the appreciation for literature.

Phonics

We follow the Fun Family Phonics Program. Children learn how to draw letters in upper and lower case, letter sounds, & object connection. Our goal is to provide a proper grasp of the ABC’s rather than memorization.

Field Trips

Walkable field trips are planned to various community places throughout the year. Parents have the option to have their child participate in preapproved outings where they can learn more about the community.

Building Station

Various blocks and building materials are provided to encourage creativity and development of motor skills. Materials allow for activities such as taking apart, filling and emptying, sorting and stacking, and assembling.

Imaginative Play

Children have access to an array of costumes, clothing and accessories to encourage role-playing and practice dressing/undressing.

Fine Motor Development

Items are given such as pencil grips, safety-scissors, and playdoh to work on fine motor skills. A rice or water table is available with tools to pick up rice and sort , and funnels and containers to practice pouring.

Music and Movement

Together the children and teachers will sing common nursery songs and participate in routine dances and free dance. Music and movement is flexible to promote inclusivity to children of all abilities.

Special Helper

Special helpers are selected for the week for the preschool classes, children as special helpers will assist teachers with tasks such as circle time, calendars, etc. The special helper also will be able to bring something from home for show and tell.

Theme/Colour Days

MRCS implements theme days throughout the months. These themes are based on holidays, seasons, colours, cultural and indigenous events. With the theme days, all music, books and art will coordinate.

Creativity & Art

Art is available to explore freely, and within a group lesson setting for them to learn how to follow directions. Individual expression and creativity is encouraged while developing fine & visual perception skills.

Sand & Water Play

We set up sand/water activities to promote inclusive play while meeting multisensory developmental needs. Children are able to develop investigative and problem solving skills.

Circle Time

Circle time is carried out daily and an important part of the MRCS curriculum. Here children will learn to participate in group activities, sing songs, discuss the weather, and participate in show and tell.

Workbook Station

MRCS provides various learning workbooks for children to access. These workbooks include lessons on colours, shapes, numbers and phonics.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor play is incorporated into daily schedules. During the nicer months, schedules are adapted to encourage more outdoor activities & parents are reminded to pack appropriate attire and supplies for outdoor activities.

Special Guests

MRCS will have community members come visit the classroom to talk about topics relatable to the children. This can include local dentists, sport program providers, local Elders and cultural leaders.
